Executive Director of National Religious Organization Gains confidence to Lead

A national religious organization, consisting of a small national administrative office with churches located around the country, hired a new executive director (ED).

The executive board felt the ED could benefit from leadership coaching. Additionally, the organization was beginning to revise its governance model and there were many questions about how to proceed.

How We Helped

Over the course of 9 months, the ED participated in executive coaching using a leadership development program.

The coach also advised the board about the implications to them and to the ED of adopting Policy Governance and how they might go about implementing it.

Results Achieved

  • The ED gained confidence in her role, became clear about priorities, improved her time management, became very knowledgeable about the implications of Policy Governance, and is displaying initiative in developing the organization.
  • The board is moving ahead with Policy Governance, though it is still working through how to “let go” of their previous very “hands-on” approach.
  • The communication between the Board and the ED has improved considerably.
”I would say the most significant result of the coaching work we did together is the confidence I feel to assert myself in leading the organization. I feel a sense of freedom and competence to lead the organization and an optimism about our collective ability to make a meaningful difference in the organization. Our discussions about Policy Governance were very valuable to me. They have given me clarity about the Policy Governance model which helps me navigate our day-to-day operations as we, as an organization, try to function in a more efficient and effective way.”
