Executive Director Overcomes Self-Doubt, Values Cultural Differences

A new woman leader at a major international non-profit that works with reproductive health wanted to live up to her new job but was plagued with self-doubt and insecurity. She felt inadequate and doubted if she was going to be accepted because of her different cultural and ethnic background. Her stress level was even causing physical problems like headaches, back pain and flu-like symptoms.

How We Helped

Paula coached the client one-on-one using her proprietary methodology that involved brain/body integration. The coaching exercises and their application to the client’s questions made the client consciously realize many things the client already was dimly aware of but didn’t realize how they affected her work. She had been brought up to be of service and put others’ needs first.

Another factor was the need to be a traditional wife, while her position required her to live physically separate from her husband for periods of time, which drew criticism from her family and friends. She had also grown up exposed to racism and was afraid to assert her authority, expecting to be rejected.

Results Achieved

  • As a result of our work, she was able to overcome many aspects of her conditioning and as a result, became much more confident.
  • She started to appreciate that her background was actually an advantage in her position.
  • She was able to successfully navigate the hierarchical non-profit structure, delivered major results in the projects she was managing and was eventually promoted to a senior position.
“Without our work, I wouldn’t have even applied for this position”
