Training Managers to Be Performance Coaches Increases Staff Productivity and Resourcefulness

How to Become the Manager Everyone Wants to Work For!

DCAS (New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services) engaged us to deliver a two-day, instructor-led course across multiple NYC agencies designed for managers. This learning practicum was designed to explore the attitudes and coaching practices of a manager - developing employees to think through problems themselves, thereby developing each person’s capabilities, pride, self-confidence and ability to act more independently in the future. The course was found to be so valuable that two other agencies brought the course in-house for larger groups of their own leaders. (Department of Education, City University of New York).

How We Helped

We delivered a two-day instructional experience: Manager As Performance Coach: A Practicum. It consisted of some preliminary presentation and then focused on group exercises and practice coaching. It was taught both in-person and remotely

It included these learning objectives:

  • Understand the benefits of being a manager who coaches.
  • Learn the 4 stages of the Performance Curve and how coaching makes a difference
  • Learn an 8-step coaching model and basic coaching skills/best practices
  • Become familiar with what coaching sounds/looks like
  • Explore the nonverbal aspects of coaching
  • Explore communication styles and how they impact the coaching conversation
  • Create a detailed implementation plan to use on the job

Results Achieved

Across participating agencies, the training achieved the following outcomes:

  • Actionable follow-through, with each participant leaving with a personalized leadership action plan
  • Awareness and conscious choice of a different management style and how to implement it. Focus on the manager’s role as ‘people developer’.
  • Relationships with other participants who were matched as post-training accountability partners to practice coaching and reinforce skills.
  • Increased confidence in empowering greater productivity and employee growth.
  • Inter-Agency Implementation Growth- referrals resulting in two additional agencies wanting this capability for their own managers. (Department of Education, City University of New York)
